Culture Is Not Something We Left Behind. It Is Something We Carry Forward.

At SUDD Foundation, we believe that cultural identity is not just a memory — it is a living, breathing source of strength, healing, and resilience. Our Cultural Healing & Preservation program creates spaces where South Sudanese Australians of all ages can reconnect with their heritage, celebrate their traditions, and pass their culture on to the next generation. In a country where South Sudanese people are too often defined by deficit narratives in the media, we choose a different story — one rooted in pride, beauty, and the extraordinary richness of South Sudanese culture.

"We do not have to choose between being South Sudanese and being Australian. We are both. And both make us stronger."

— SUDD Foundation

Five Ways We Celebrate & Preserve Culture

From annual festivals to healing circles, every program is designed to honour who we are and where we came from.

Annual Stories of Strength Cultural Festival

Each year, SUDD Foundation hosts the Stories of Strength Festival — a community celebration that brings together South Sudanese Australians and the broader Melbourne community for a day of storytelling, music, dance, food, and connection.

The festival is a proud showcase of South Sudanese culture — past and present — and an invitation for all Melburnians to experience the richness of our community.

Intergenerational Storytelling Circles

Our elders carry wisdom that cannot be found in any book. Through intergenerational storytelling circles, we create structured spaces for elders and youth to share stories, listen to each other, and bridge the gap that resettlement can sometimes create between generations.

These sessions are facilitated with care and respect for both traditional and contemporary voices.

Traditional Music, Dance & Arts

Keeping our creative heritage alive through hands-on workshops and participation across Melbourne.

Workshops in traditional South Sudanese music, drumming, and song Cultural dance classes for children, youth, and adults Traditional arts and craft programs — keeping creative heritage alive Participation in multicultural events, festivals, and school programs across Melbourne

Cultural Healing — Trauma-Informed Community Support

Many members of our community have lived through conflict, displacement, and loss. Our culturally grounded healing circles acknowledge this reality while centering community, story, and connection as pathways to recovery.

Facilitated by trained community leaders, these circles offer a safe, familiar space for processing difficult experiences.

Cultural Education & Workshops

We deliver sessions on South Sudanese history, values, and traditions for community members of all backgrounds — including schools, service providers, councils, and community organisations.

Our goal is to build broader understanding and genuine respect across cultures.

Our Vision for South Sudanese Australian Culture

This program is built to ensure that South Sudanese culture thrives in Australia — not just as a memory, but as a living, growing part of who we are.
